WHAT TYPE OF VIRUS IS CORONA VIRUS?
Coronavirus are enveloped (as opposed to nonenveloped virus such as norovirus) and as such can be interrupted relatively easily. This is primarily achieved by breaking apart the envelope which is made up of proteins called peplomers (the spikes you can see in the picture) which are ‘glued together’ with a grease. Emulsifying the grease and/or damaging the peplomers or in some other way destroying the envelope renders the virus as nonviable.
WHY TREAT SURFACES?
The Centre for Disease Control states: “Current evidence suggests that novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in households and community settings”.
HOW CAN THIS BE DONE?
The EPA has released a list of products that are effective against Coronavirus and in particular SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19. Notably Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Hypochlorite, and Quaternary Ammonia are among those that prove effective. In addition, Hydroxyl and Chlorine Dioxide (stabilised) have been used successfully.
HOW CAN THEY BE APPLIED?
Our delivery system include ULV, Gas and Electrostatic. The right mechanism should be selected for each situation to ensure adequate delivery to the affected surfaces without causing undue damage to building materials. Contact time should be monitored to ensure that exposure to the product is adequate for an optimal kill rate.
